Local wrestlers place at state finals
Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas sent a couple of wrestlers to compete at the Florida High School Junior Varsity State Wrestling Tournament this past weekend in Osceola.
FPC’s Drew Dance and Pirate Noel Alicea both placed third in their divisions. Caleb Brower (Matanzas) took fifth.
At the girls state tournament, Makayla Wilder placed fourth, earning a medal for the second straight season, and teammate freshman Angelina Bermudez placed fifth. Together, they — the Pirates’ only two wrestlers — finished in 15th place out of over 50 schools.
Bulldogs wrestling take down rival Matanzas
FPC finished another undefeated in dual meets after taking down crosstown rival Matanzas on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at Matanzas.
The Bulldogs went a perfect 15-0 this season, which takes their five-year record to 86-4.
FPC will get back on the mat for the district tournament at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at FPC.
Matanzas lacrosse gets first win of the season
After an opening-season loss to Nease 17-12, the Matanzas Pirates bounced back to beat Pedro 20-3 to secure their first win of the season.
Andrew McIntire scored four goals and assisted on four others, while Storm Schalit scored five goals and added two assists. Maximus Schalit added three goals.
FPC girls basketball eliminated in playoffs
The Lady Bulldogs were eliminated in the region semifinal by losing to Spruce Creek 52-36 Tuesday, Feb. 14, at Spruce Creek.
FPC (15-12) struggled to maintain any consistency this season, but the Bulldogs didn’t play with any seniors. They were, however, able to make it to the district final and win their region quarterfinal against Oviedo 44-37. Sky Green finished with 20 points and 13 rebounds in that game.
Moving forward, FPC looks to return all of its players, which should make for an ever more successful season.
