IRS telephone scams have been reported throughout central Florida, according to Ormond Beach police. Victims are receiving phone calls from an individual claiming to be from the IRS and demanding immediate payment or threatening the victim by indicating that the police will be sent out to arrest them for non-payment.
The Internal Revenue Service has stated that they will not call citizens and demand payment, or threaten to send law enforcement to their house. The IRS advises victims to report the call to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 800-366-4484. The incident can also be reported to the Federal Trade Commission at FTC.gov. (Add IRS Telephone Scam in the notes).
The Ormond Beach Police Department cautions citizens to avoid giving personal information, credit card or bank account information to any unknown person, whether in person or on the phone, said Officer Keith Walker.
“If you are a victim of this scam, please contact your local police department to report the incident,” Walker said.
