First the Super Bowl. Then the Daytona 500. But the big event of the year for Racing Fingers Quilt Guild is QuiltWeek, and it’s coming March 1-4 at the Ocean Center. The event drew 15,000 last year.
Racing Fingers, an Ormond Beach guild, will volunteer at the event and also make fidget quilts, which are used for Alzheimer's patients at Florida Hospitals. The quilts have ribbons, zippers, bows, spools and other items to keep patients’ hands busy so they won’t do things such as pull out their IV. Quilter Dee Duckworth said they started making them a couple of years ago when it was suggested by her daughter who is a nurse at Florida Memorial Health Center.
QuiltWeek, sponsored the American Quilter’s Society, features the best in quilts from throughout the U.S. as well as workshops, prizes and shopping opportunities for quilters from scissors to sewing machine furniture.
Linda Derryberry, president of the local guild, said the event is so popular with quilters that she would take a week-long vacation to attend the national convention before it came to Daytona Beach.
There are about 45 members of the Racing Fingers Quilt Guild, and they hold their meetings in the evenings. Visit racingfingersquiltguild.com and quiltweek.com.
