Barret Manfre completes his first marathon
Barret Manfre, son of the former sheriff Jim Manfre, ran in his first marathon Sunday, Jan. 8, at the Disney Run in Orlando.
The Disney marathon goes through all four Disney Parks and the Wide World of Sports Complex totaling 26.2 miles. Manfre finished in the marathon 3:38, enough to place him 533 out of more than 17,000 runners.
Manfre is in his second year at Duke University; he majors in mechanical engineering. He’s also in the Navy ROTC program.
Palm Coast Tennis Center hosts USTA Pro Circuit Men’s Futures Tourney
See the rising stars of men’s tennis from around the world compete for a $10,000 purse from Friday, Jan. 27, through Sunday, Feb. 5, at the USTA Pro Circuit Men’s Futures Tournament at the Palm Coast Tennis Center, 1290 Belle Terre Parkway. This is Palm Coast’s eighth year hosting the tournament.
A Wild Card Men’s Open tournament for local players’ entry in the qualifying portion of the Futures Tournament will be Jan. 24-26, with entry fee of $40 per player. The Wild Card is singles only. Matanzas wrestlers earn Flagler Duals wins
With a shorthanded roster, the Matanzas wrestling team went 4-5 at the Flagler Duals on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 13-14, at FPC.
The Pirates forfeited four weight divisions (automatic 24 points), which led to four of their dual losses in which they loss by 13 points or less.
Lawrence Russo finished the weekend with the only undefeated (9-0) record. Josh Bower suffered only loss in nine matches. Stone White, Chris Mixon and Ethan Goodman each went 7-2, and Jacobi Givens went 6-2.
Matanzas will wrestle against Pine Ridge on senior night at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, at Matanzas.
FPC boys soccer shuts out two straight opponents
The Bulldogs blanked Yulee Saturday, Jan. 14, at FPC.
Ramtin Amiri recorded a hat trick (three goals) while assisting on two others. Anthony Smith and Jose Fernandez each had a goal and two assists. Jorge Giacobbe-Arauz scored twice, and Baron Pedro assisted on two goals. Nick Goretti also scored a goal. Goalkeeper Elijah Williams saved seven shots.
The Bulldogs have scored 12 goals while not allowing any in return in their last two matches, but they host undefeated Seabreeze to close out the regular season at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at FPC.
First Baptist Crusader Janiah Sims hits game winner
In their first season, the First Baptist Christian Academy Lady Crusaders achieved their third win of the season through six games with a 14-13 decision over Heart Homeschool Academy on Monday, Jan. 16, at First Baptist Church.
Eighth grader Janiah Sims scored the game-winning bucket in the final seconds of the game.
