Sarah Flannery was the last of 16 students called to step up to the microphone at the Flagler County Spelling Bee. She was also the last one standing, 16 rounds after the spelling bee began.
The eighth-grade Indian Trails Middle School student won by correctly spelling "harpsichord."
Sarah Flannery and Madison Bernhauser, a sixth-grade student at Old Kings Elementary, faced off for three rounds, until the word "alleviate" tripped Madison up.
Sarah will represent Flagler County at the 73rd Regional Spelling Bee, hosted by the Florida Times-Union, in Jacksonville on March 4. The winner of that competition will compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.
“I studied hard, and my mom quizzed me,” Sarah said after the competition.
She said the hardest word she was asked to spell was “matriarch.”
