Chicago-based Alfred Benesch and Co. has merged with Ghyabi & Associates, a transportation and engineering firm headquartered in Ormond Beach.
The announcement was made at the Ghyabi & Associates office on N. U. 1 on Monday, July 10, to a room full of state and local officials and business leaders.
“The need to expand into further areas of civil engineering led us to talking to Alfred Benesch & Co.,” CEO Maryam Ghyabi said.
Ghyabi’s brother, Mori Hosseini, president of ICI Homes, credited his sister’s success to her “thinking outside the box.”
“It made her successful,” Hosseini said. “She is known as someone who makes a difference. It’s one thing to have her own engineering company, it’s another to be passionate about it.”
Benesch has 31 offices in 16 states in the Midwest and on the East Coast.
“We want to grow significantly in Florida,” Bensch president John Carrato said.
Merging with Ghyabi will expand their operations with two additional locations in Florida along with Ormond Beach -- Orlando and Jacksonville.
The existing staff at Ghyabi will remain after the merger, bringing Benesch’s staff to 620.
Carroto said the company is interested in tapping into structural engineering, bridges and the railroad in Florida. Currently all railroad involvement is in the Midwest.
State Rep. Tom Leek was one of those present who spoke at the unveiling.
“If you want economic development you have to have infrastructure,” Leek said. “This is good for Volusia County and good for the city of Ormond Beach.”
