Port Orange's old police department building will no longer be known as the old police department.

On Tuesday, July 18, in an unanimous vote, the city council made the decision to rename the building the Dorothy L. Hukill City Center Annex.

The council had previously discussed changing the name of the building during a workshop on Tuesday, June 27. Council members had talked about using the name, the DuBois Building, after the city's first mayor, Dr. Henry K. DuBois.

It was decided to name the building after Dorothy Hukill, a former Port Orange mayor and current Florida senator. The city had previously sent out a citizen survey back in May asking residents for suggestions on what the name should be for the old Police Department building. Other names suggested include Jail Number One, The Annex and the Dr. John Milton Hawks Administrative Building, after the man who is credited for helping colonize Port Orange.

The word annex was included in the survey more than 30 times, making it the choice word for the majority of citizens who participated. The decision to rename the building, located at 1395 Dunlawton Ave., is part of the city celebrating 150 years as a community since it was first established in 1867.

Plans for the former Police Department building include offices for Public Utilities, Parks and Recreation and the Port Orange Police Athletic League, in addition to records storage for the city clerk.

"I think it honors somebody who's done an awful lot coming before us in city service and still looks out for the city and her state service," Port Orange Mayor Don Burnette said.
