A local non-profit is trying to find a volunteer to help teach an athletic program to autistic children and children who have been through trauma.

The volunteer would work as an athletic coach at Our Children First, a non-profit serving Volusia and Flagler counties. The program would be run twice a month to provide a way for the children to participate in a sport that they might not be able to otherwise.

Christina Markoff, the CEO and founder, explained this is also a way to help out parents and encourage the community to become more involved by helping the youth in their area.

"There are far too many out there that need us and they're not able to participate in regular programs," Markoff said "And anything that our particular organization does is always try to keep everything free for the children and their families. That is why it's critical that we have volunteers at this moment."

Markoff said volunteers are vital, especially in a new organization like Our Children First, which became a 501c3 back in April. However, she has been working on it since November of last year.

According to Markoff, they can't afford to pay anyone at this time but that it's important for their volunteers to want to pay it forward. Markoff said volunteering is a way to get out into the community and show love for not just the children in the area but people in general.

"It gives a sense of worth to a lot of these people that volunteer that are wanting to make a difference in our community and change the lives of people and the children," Markoff said. "Our particular organization helps children from all walks of life, mostly that have been through some sort of trauma."
