The Ormond Beach Police Department and the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office warns citizens to beware of phone scams after a stint of incidents this week.
OBPD is investigating a jury duty fine scam after receiving three complaints from locals. Police reported all three cases involved a phone call telling people they are being fined for missing jury duty. In order to pay the fine, the person calling tells them they must buy a Green Dot Visa. In all three instances, the caller has introduced himself as Doug Davis, with different titles—Captain, detective and deputy marshall.
The VCSO also reported an incident in Ormond where a woman received two calls from two different men pretending to be VCSO captains. The men told her she had outstanding traffic citations, owing thousands in fines. They told her she had to settle the fines over the phone—even providing her with a phone number to call that had a fake voicemail claiming the caller had reached VSCO.
Both OBPD and the VSCO urge citizens not to send money and to call the corresponding office to complete a report.
