Flagler Schools students put their mathematical skills to the test at the Math Madness district finals competition on May 22 at Wadsworth Elementary. The competition encourages students to develop skills with fact families, multiplication and mental math. The first place winners are:
Third Grade: Robert Yost, Old Kings Elementary
Fourth Grade: Jojo Taylor, Rymfire Elementary
Fifth Grade: Tyler Grady, Rymfire Elementary
Sixth Grade: Sebastian Azevado, Wadsworth Elementary

A Palm Coast senior studying interdisciplinary studies, Khrysten Elizabeth Bickham, earned a spot on the Chowan University Spring 2017 semester’s Dean’s List. Dean’s List winners have accomplished a grade point average between 3.25 and 3.79 for the semester.
Members of the Columbian Club of Flagler County gathered on Armed Forces Day, May 20, to honor those who served in the U.S. military in past and present. Mike Kohn sang the National Anthem and played Taps on the trumpet. The organization also dedicated the statue of the fall solider at 51 Old Kings Road North.
Local novelist Michel Bruneau has been awarded The Garcia Memorial Prize for his newest novel, "My Author is Dead." The Garcia Memorial Prize, an annual award presented in conjunction with the national Reader Views Book Awards, is given to the best fiction book of the year.
Local Boy Scout Jacob Schichtel recently earned his "God and Church" emblem. Schichtel was part of a small group of scouts that attended a Memorial Day remembrance service at First Baptist Church in Palm Coast on May 28.
Flagler Beach resident Randy Jaye’s book “Flagler County, Florida: A Centennial History” has recently been released and is now on Amazon.com for $20. As the Amazon description states, “the book features an American county’s 100-year journey from a sparsely populated, rural, agricultural, timbering and non-developed coastal area to recently becoming one of the fastest growing areas in the United States.”
The George Washington Carver Community Center is starting a drumline and is encouraging donations of bass and snare drums so youth can participate in this group.
Flagler County Commission Chair Nate McLaughlin, who is also a musician, donated a full drum set to the Carver Center to help it in its efforts to get the Drum Corps going.
“This will be a great program,” McLaughlin said in a press release. “I didn’t make Little League as a kid, but my dad asked me what I could do. I got a drum set, and music has been my thing ever since.”

Carver Center, located at 206 E. Drain St., is a recreational center that also offers tutoring, after school study, internet access, as well as serving the community with GED classes, employment counseling and other services and athletic tournaments.
