Flagler Technical Institute celebrated its students graduating from Adult Education, Career and Technical Education and the TRAIL Transition Program during a ceremony on June 7 at Flagler Auditorium.
After spending one year learning the medical field hands-on at Flagler Technical Institute’s Medical Assisting program, Kirsten Keever was able to turn the tassel on June 7 and celebrate her success.
“I never knew I was ready to go to college or any type of school when I graduated high school,” Keever said. “I didn’t think I could do it.”
The 22-year-old said she owes her success in part to encouragement from Kathryn Weed, program facilitator for Health Sciences at Flagler Technical Institute, as well as the academic tutors she’s had throughout her educational career who have keep her motivated and on track.
“I knew she had the determination to be anything she wanted to be,” Weed said. “She just had to stop listening to the voices that were telling her she couldn’t.”
Keever passed her medical certification exam on June 1, and she aspires to be a registered medical assistant in pediatrics.
“I feel very accomplished,” Keever said. “I don’t think I could have done it without the people who supported me.”
Keever advises others who may be struggling with self-doubt to ignore the voice in your head saying you can’t accomplish something, and instead, finish what you started.
