After having been closed for two years, four months and two weeks, James F. Holland Memorial Park will finally reopen with a community party on June 16.
The project was supposed to take one year and three months, but problems with the construction company, Hurricane Matthew and other concerns delayed the project, much to the frustration of city staff and residents alike.
Even after the city got fid of the contractor, Tumbleson White Construction, delays continued. In October, City Manager Jim Landon projected the park would open by the end of January.
But the city staff believes residents will not be disappointed when they see the finished product.
“Get ready to explore the sugar mill-themed playground, stroll the perimeter path, play with your pups at the Dog Park and enjoy your favorite sports at James F. Holland Memorial Park!” reads a city press release.
The Holland Park festivities begin at 5 p.m. Friday June 16, at the oldest and largest community park, at 18 Florida Park Drive.
A ribbon-cutting will be at 5:30 p.m. with remarks Mayor Milissa Holland, daughter of the park’s namesake.
Changes to the park include a .75-mile walking trail around the perimeter. Whereas before the park’s entrance led around the playground to a dead end, it now has been connected in a loop surrounding the playground and dog parks. The restrooms have been rebuilt. The 26-acre park is also home to the Palm Coast Historical Society headquarters.
The playground features a fenced-in playground with coquina rock structures, slides, bridges and ladders, a climbing wall, a zip line and an archeological digging area.
A new secure entry to the 1.5-acre dog park will open onto two separate play areas, one for large dogs and one for small. Wash-down stations have been installed.
