It may have appeared the Riptide Gymnastics and Cheer summer camp students were merely playing with colored powder on Thursday, June 8, at Riptide’s center. But their color blast affair actually served as a testing method.
“When you do a gymnastics meet, you want to do something cool.”

“When you do a gymnastics meet, you want to do something cool,” said Chrystal Hinchliffe, one of the Riptide coaches. “We want to make it a theme for a future competition. You always want to do something that stands out.”
Riptide’s co-founder Hollie Terry introduced the color blast to her program for the first time this summer, but it was a couple
weeks ago when she presented it to Chrystal in a…special way.
“When my mom came to my house,” Hinchliffe said, “I opened the door, she doused me with it. That was my first experience with it. It tasted different from what I thought. I felt like I was eating corn starch.
To test the colored powder, the coaches and students poured it on each other and then practiced some of their flips and routines. They wanted to see if it would get into the gymnasts’ eyes or react to sweat. The powder didn’t have any negative effects and only brought smiles from everyone at the camp.
“I don’t think any other gym would do that,” said Peyton Hebert, one of the camp attendees, “but I’m glad it washes out easily.”
