Amid the dozens of kids running around outside on the playground or up and down the right side of the basketball court, a separate group of students on the other side of the court learned and played football the flag football camp on Tuesday, June 13, at the YMCA in Ormond.
Flag football camp will go from June 11-15. Throughout the week, coach Justin Hampton teaches beginning players some of the basic football skills while also helping the more-developed players understand play calling, route running and other intermediate abilities.
Hampton designed four plays designed for a running back and wide receivers, which used fly routes (straight down the field), crossing patters and hooks — football’s common routes. Each player lined up in practiced each route.
“I think it’s important they have a fun time,” Hampton said, “because then they’ll continue to be active as they get older. And, whether they do flag football here or not, they’ll get the idea of what they’re supposed to be doing.
The Y held its inaugural flag football season last year from October through December. Last year’s summer camp was also its first. Hampton hopes to see his camp kids play in this year’s flag football season.
