About 20 ago, when Sheriff Rick Staly was working as a sergeant in Orange County, he responded to a case in which two young children woke up to find that their mother had hanged herself.
"You don't remember every case, but that's one you remember," Staly said.
Although there is nothing that would solve those children's problems immediately, Staly said he found that when he gave them teddy bears, they calmed down.
On Friday, June 16, a new State Farm agency, run by Tim and Lisa Hogan, donated 100 teddy bears to the Flagler County Sheriff's Office to give to children who are impacted by crimes or car crashes. The bears were presented during the show "Free For All Friday" on WNZF.
"You give them this little teddy bear and they hug onto them and they calm right down," Staly said.
Lisa Hogan is also a board member of the Guardian ad Litem program, which mentors and guides children who are affected by crimes.
