If Saturday morning was any indication of how the Ormond Spikes 10U team will play at state, the coaches and parents should prepare for a longer stay. The Spikes 10U defeated MBA Elite and Strikers Baseball on Saturday, June 24, in New Smyrna.
After winning their second straight division championship, Ormond returns to the North Florida Babe Ruth State Tournament, which begins Saturday, July 6, in Oakleaf in the Jacksonville area.
“I’ve been around a lot of baseball parents. Sometimes, you don’t get full support but constant bickering. This is like a village here.”
CHIP CEROVAC, Ormond Spikes head coach
“Last year we lost in the semifinals,” head coach Chip Cerovac said, “I think we got a very good chance to win it. The guys look very disciplined, and their batting has significantly improved from last year.”
Cerovac, who’s been coaching this group for the last three years and five seasons (fall and spring), has led the Spikes to its two
district titles and multiple Nations Baseball tournament championships. Cerovac credits four components to his team’s success: A good coaching staff, players who are well-disciplined and coachable, help from coaches on the outside and great baseball parents.
“I’ve been around a lot of baseball parents, he said. “Sometimes, you don’t get full support but constant bickering. This is like a village here.”
On bringing in other coaches, Cerovac added, “We’re not so proud to think we can do it all. We have five other coaches in the area who specialize in different skills, and we have them in front of the guys all the time.”
If the Spikes win the state tournament, they will become the second Ormond team to reach regionals.
