Deputy Richard Petkovsek had stopped the car for a common driving error — running a stop sign. But the traffic stop quickly became something other than common: After Petkovsek walked up to the car, the driver sped off, running over the deputy's foot in the process.
Deputies are still looking for the suspect, identified as 24-year-old Jimmie Lee Belle III, according to a Flagler County Sheriff's Office news release.
Belle, a resident of Ryker Lane in Palm Coast, was driving on a suspended license when the traffic stop took place at about 6:53 p.m. June 24 on Second Street in Flagler Beach, according to the news release.
He was last seen heading over the Flagler Beach bridge in the car, a gray 2016 Dodge Dart with Florida tag DUJ D90.
“If you injure and run from one of my deputies, we will find you,” Sheriff Rick Staly said in the news release. “It is best to turn yourself in now before more potential charges are added.”
Petkovsek was treated at Florida Hospital Flagler and has since been released.
Belle faces charges of knowingly driving with a suspended license, fleeing and eluding, and aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer. He is already on probation in connection with another crime: He was sentenced to three years of probation in May after being convicted on a charge of domestic battery by strangulation.
