School may be out for most students but that doesn’t mean everyone in Port Orange has stopped learning.
At the Port Orange Regional Library on Wednesday, a packed auditorium of children in kindergarten through fifth grade participated in an educational science program. The hands-on event, Experience Mad Science, provided a way for children to learn in a fun way.
The presenter, dressed in a lab coat, taught the crowd about a variety of subjects, from the workings of aqueducts to the engineering behind arches. Many of the children had their own opportunity to go up front and help with demonstrations, whether that was using a ball to explain force or lining up to form a makeshift aqueduct.
The science program is part of the Build a Better World summer reading program, which is being put on through the Port Orange Library Friends of the Library. Port Orange Youth Services Librarian Laura Armstrong explained these programs not only continue learning through the summer but provide it in a way that is engaging.
“We want to provide experiences for our community, maybe getting to see things they don’t see elsewhere,” Armstrong said. “We believe in bringing in people from all over the community.”
