Flagler Beach City Commissioners awarded eight Flagler students in seventh to 12th grade with scholarships for the National Flight Academy on June 22. The honorees were: Cody Michaux (Flagler Palm Coast High), Douglas Bentley (Matanzas High), Kale Britton (Matanzas High), David Labron (Matanzas High), Garrett Linton (Flagler Palm Coast High), Megan Brink (Matanzas High), Grace Ledrich (Matanzas High) and Olivia Whitten (Flagler Palm Coast High).
Palm Coast author Jennifer Niland Wright published a book called “The Grumbly Pug”. The book is written from the viewpoint of Wright’s first pug, Zoe, and includes a collection of true, short stories. Other adopted animals are featured, as well.
Palm Coast’s new floodplain management rating is among the top 13 in the nation. Officials from FEMA, ISO and the Florida Division of Emergency Management presented the rating, which measures how well a city is reducing the risk of flood and a provides residents discounts on flood insurance, at the Palm Coast City Council meeting in June.
The fourth annual Palm Coast and the Flagler Beaches Senior Games will be held Sept. 9 to 24. Adults age 50 and older can sign up for the competition in 11 different sports: archery, cycling, single and doubles tennis, single and doubles pickleball, golf, golf croquet, swimming, horseshoes and ballroom dancing. Flagler County Engineer Faith Alkhatib will be inducted as president of the Florida Association of County Engineers and Road Superintendents on June 30 for the upcoming year. FACERS is a nonprofit that’s tasked with monitoring how legislation will affect transportation and public works, updating the “Florida Greenbook” and more. Alkhatib is currently the vice president of FACERS.
Twenty-nine Palm Coast residents graduated this month from the Palm Coast Citizens Academy, which is a comprehensive five-week program designed to educate interested locals about the operation and workings of the city government, including visits to City Hall, the main Fire Station 25 and Water Treatment Plant No. 3. The graduating class is the 40th in the program’s history.
This session’s graduates were: Gloria Benedict, Jim Bowling, Phyllis Bowling, David Burns, Kathy Burns, Paula Callaghan, Elaine Deehl, Todd Deehl, Mary DeVito, Robert DeVito, Martin Dusel, Maxine Dusel, Caroline Fleet, Mark Fleet, Jerry Frame, Katherine Frame, Nicki Haynes, Andre Hofmann, Eugene Hofmann, Jonita McCree, Partricia Nice, Bernard Packman, Sue Packman, Rod Poster, Tina Poster, James Stewart, Maria Stewart, Maryse Toussaint and Ilsa Wilhelm.

The Chi Delta Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. recently celebrated its 15th anniversary with a white party, in which everyone dons white clothing, and dinner at Halifax Plantation Golf Club in Ormond Beach. More than 225 guests joined members to commemorate the occasion.
