To celebrate 150 years as a city, the Port Orange City Council has made it a priority to rename a local building after a well-known individual who has served the community.

On Tuesday, the City Council proposed changing the name of the former Port Orange Police Department to the Dorothy L. Hukill City Annex, a former Port Orange mayor and current Florida senator.

The name change to the building, located on 1395 Dunlawton Ave., will be put on the agenda to be voted on during an upcoming City Council meeting.

The city had previously sent out a citizen survey back in May asking residents for suggestions on what the name should be for the old Police Department building. Other names suggested include Jail Number One, The Annex and the DuBois Building, named after the city’s first mayor, Dr. Henry K. DuBois.

The word annex was included in the survey more than 30 times, making it the choice word for the majority of citizens who participated.

Plans for the former Police Department building include offices for Public Utitlies, Parks and Recreation and the Port Orange Police Athletic League, in addition to records storage for the city clerk.
