Anyone visiting Reed Canal Park in South Daytona this past week might have been confused by the crowds watching small boats making their way through an obstacle course on the pond.
For the spectators, they were there to watch students maneuver autonomous, robotic boats through the course in hopes of winning the 2017 RoboBoat Competition.
First place went to the Daytona Beach Homeschoolers who went home with $5000. Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University received $2500 after coming in fifth place. Two students from Spruce Creek High School were interning with the Embry Riddle team.
Spruce Creek High also set up a demo on the billfold for the community event.
The competition, wich took place between June 20-25, included tasks that mimicked similar situations being developed for oceanographic operations such as coastal surveillance and port security.
