There’s no need for football colleges to question if Mainland Buccaneer Adonis Boone can adjust on the fly. He’s been doing that for the last several months.
After being bunched up in his grandmother’s one bedroom, Boone’s mother found the family a home that they began to move into last week.
In a previous article, I wrote about Hurricane Matthew’s winds knocking trees down on Boone’s family’s house and vehicle. The damages forced Boone, his mother, and his three smaller siblings to immediately vacate the premises.
Boone’s family moved into his grandmother’s one-bedroom apartment. Half of the family slept in the living area, and Boone, his mother and brother slept in his grandmother’s room.
“That’s crazy, right?” Boone questioned with a slight chuckle. “But, during that time, I learned to cherish what I have, because someone always has it a little harder.”
What’s amazing about Boone is that he took no time away from the field during the last four months. He went to practice every day. Except Boone telling his coaches about his situation, the team would’ve never known he had been going through such a rough patch during the most critical time of the football season.
Despite his home life, Boone continued to practice, and he would even stay several extra hours to work by himself. Now, he’s beginning to see that work pay off.
In the last several weeks, the University of Toledo and McNeese State University — both Division I schools — have offered Boone scholarships. He has also been contacted by several other interested schools.
“I’m still not sure where I’ll be going,” Boone said, “but feels great to know I will be getting a free education soon.”
Boone has also been invited and attended several high-profile football camps in the last few months, and he will be attending the Rivals 3 Stripe Camp Sunday, March 19, in Orlando.
I’ll be the first admit that I can’t evaluate an offensive lineman’s talent. But, I do know character and work ethic, and this young man lacks neither.
