Mainland softball gets its first ever college signees
Dani Keister and Angelina Delrosso recently became Mainland’s first ever softball players to sign college scholarships, according to head coach Alec DeWeese.
Delrosso signed with Thomas University in Thomasville Georgia, and Keister signed with Hillsborough Community College in Tampa.
A new Seabreeze distance medley relay record
The Seabreeze boys distance team broke the school’s old distance medley relay record (11:52 last season) at the Big D Relays Meet on Saturday, March 4, in DeLand.
The team shattered the record by 20 seconds. The events in order go 1200-meter run (Ian Yates), 400 (Zach Petrizzo), 800 (Logan Horning) and the 1600 (Shane Brownrigg).
Yates was also on last season’s record relay team.
Ormond Recreational Basketball League champions
The Chanfrau & Chanfrau Cavaliers recently won the Ormond Beach Recreation League 10-11 division championship. The Cavs finished the season with a 13-1 record. Halifax Rowing finishes in top spots in season’s first regatta
The Halifax Rowing Association juniors recently competed in the Sarasota Invitational Regatta — the first of the season — last month in Sarasota.
HRA’s girls JV 4+ (Ashley Dodd, Julia Van Cleef, Elisa Manecke, Emma Dominguez and Jasleen Kahlon) placed first, its only top finish. The mixed high school 4+ (Grant Wichlei, Bret Bay, Dodd, Dominguez, Vince Leffler) took second, and its 4+ B-team (Ben Steel, Ben Herstein, Van Cleef, Manecke and Kahlon) placed third. Girls High School 2x (Manecke and Dominguez) placed second, and the boys JV 4+ (Wichlei, Bay, Steel, Herstein and Leffler) placed third. The Women’s Masters 2- (Nikolai Hargreaves and Linda Smith) took second place.
More medals for track and field wonder Buzz Porter
Buzz Porter, 80, recently returned from competing in the USATF Masters National Indoor Track and Field Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Porter competed in the five-event pentathlon, tying for first place in the nation with a score of 2966 points. He also won the high jump with a leap of 3'10", making him the national champion in that event.
Porter received a gold medal and an All-American pin for his championship status.
He also participated in the long jump, triple jump and 60-meter hurdles, and he ran a leg on the 4x400-meter relay. For his efforts over the three-day competition, Porter won one gold medal, four silvers and a bronze medal. He attained All American status in nine individual events.
