For the last 50 years the Council on Aging has been Volusia County's "safety net" for vulnerable elder citizens. The COA provides non-medical support services to allow seniors to remain safely in their own homes. As the only non-profit lead agency in the county, COA is the trusted source for the health and welfare of seniors and will continue in its role as advocate and protector for our elder population.
This year’s theme is “Opening Doors” since each aspect of our compassionate care seems to involve a door: Whether it’s a door you open to enter a senior center, a caregiver you open the door to each day, or a lunch delivery at home by Meals on Wheels.
Meals are the “heart” of our organization with 65 routes and the delivery by volunteers of 500 meals a day to homebound seniors. COA neighborhood dining sites feed an additional 300 those seniors who gather for a hot lunch with friends. The COA’s four senior centers offer activities, exercise, games and camaraderie for hundreds of active seniors throughout the week.
“Meals on Wheels is just one part of our story. We continue to evolve and reinvent ourselves to meet the ever growing and ever changing needs of our seniors,” Sarah F. Gurtis, President and CEO of COA, said. “There are so many who will need our services and we cannot rely on government funding to fill those needs. Our entire community is invited to support COA to help care for our most vulnerable population.”
