Roger Bivins Jr. was four years old when he first saw the Mainland Drumline.
“This is no ordinary drumline,” Roger, the section leader said. “For me to be a section leader is unbelievable.”
Mainland is hosting its 6th drumline event at 5 p.m., Saturday, March 25 in the school’s Performing Arts Center. Since they are the host, the 17-member band will not compete at the event.
This year the competition will include two dance teams, the Dancing Lady Cats and, Diamond and Pearls.
The band room reverberates as the students not only play their instruments, but dance as well.
Jonathan Dill the student conductor became aware of the group when he was younger and his dad was asked to drive the drummers to a performance. A home-schooled student, Dill’s job in the band is to warm them up for class and rehearsals.
According to Roger being a band member requires several qualities; “hard work, ambition, loyalty, creativity, passion and determination.”
The Saturday fundraiser is one of many the band has to pay for transportation to events and other needs.
