The Matanzas Pirates had no problem proving they are still the dominant lacrosse team in the county, beating the Flagler Palm Coast Bulldogs 23-4 on Friday, March 24, at Matanzas.
Despite the lopsided victory, Matanzas head coach Jeff Goren praised the Dawgs effort, saying, “I hadn’t seen them play all year, but I was impressed. My guys are a little more experienced, so we were able to put up big numbers on the scoreboard, but I think FPC played very well. They didn’t quit and played hard the entire game.”
Regardless of FPC (3-9) giving up the most points it has surrendered this season, first-year head coach said that he had the most fun he’s had all year.
“The kids were happy at the end of the game” he said. “And although the level of lacrosse is different on each team, but we played with our hearts tonight. And I’m proud of that. Less mistakes were made. We just lost to an experienced team with good talent. But we’ll get our turn.”
With this win, Goren hopes his Pirates will be able to create a winning streak as the regular season winds down. The Pirates have failed to win more than two games straight this year. In order to win a third district championship, Matanzas will most likely have to win three straight games.
“We’re struggling this year to find wins, so we need to get in some kind of groove,” Goren said. “I was proud of my guys’ effort on senior night.”
