Mainland track teams finish Top 3 at conference meets
The Mainland Bucs boys track team placed second, and the girls took third at the Five-Star Conference Meet on Friday, March 24, at Flagler Palm Coast
In the girls meet, Elisa Aclipen and Samoya Calvin placed first and second in the long jump; Aclipen (second), triple jump; Samoya and Shannon Ruane (first and second), high jump; Kayla Littlefield (first), 100-meter hurdles; Aclipen, Shaniya Wilder, Littlefield and Lawren Berry (first), 4x100 relay.
Demarcus Adams took first in the long jump; Steffan Mallory (first), triple jump; Elijah White, Arnold Collins, Jahari Dorival and Lindon Cooper (second), 4x800 relay; White (second), 400-meter dash; Juwan Wright (first), 200-meter run; Adams, Mallory, Jhii Taylor and White (first), 4x400 relay.
Seabreeze girls relay team win conference gold
The Seabreeze girls 4x800 relay team (Mia Striegel, Nina Browder, Lea Gray and Grace Smith) won first place at Five-Star. Other Top 2 finishes include Azaline Thompson, who took second in the 100-meter dash, and Lea Gray (second) in the 800- and 1600-meter runs. In boys competition, Logan Horning took runner-up in both the 1600- and 3200-meter run.
Mainland flag football off to 3-0 start
Coming off a 13-1 season, the Lady Buccaneers have returned to dominance with three shutout victories over Pine Ridge (28-0), Spruce Creek (6-0) and Warner Christian Academy (19-0) to begin the season. The Bucs sit atop their district and rank No. 13 in 1A.
Samantha Harrison, student of the month
Samantha Harrison was selected as the Ormond Lions March Student-Athlete of the Month.
Harrison has earned a 4.11 GPA this year, ranking her 28th in the Class of 2017. She is a member of Gold Bright Futures and has served a sailing camp counselor and a photographer for the school’s football and baseball team.
Harrison has played on the tennis team all four years, now serving as team captain. She has received the Coach’s Award and has been named team MVP in past seasons. Harrison will attend the University of Florida where she will major in Management. She plans develop a career in contract law for the NFL.
Noah van der Burgt signs to FSC
Ormond Beach local and Father Lopez senior runner Noah van der Burgt recently signed to run cross country at Florida Southern College. Van der Burgt led the 2015 cross country team to the state title and finished the following year as the Green Wave’s top runner.
He holds the school record holder in the 2000-meter steeplechase and currently captains both the cross country and track team.
Ormond’s final RayZ Awareness 5K Run/Walk this weekend
The Bill Walter III Melanoma Research Find will be hosting the RayZ Awareness 5K Run/Walk and Fun Run for the 20th and final time, at 7:30 a.m. (5K, 8:30 for the mile) Saturday, April 1, at Birthplace of Speed Oceanfront Park. All funds raised during this event will be used to assist melanoma research, assist patients in need of financial support and increase melanoma awareness.
