More than a dozen community and business leaders were arrested for what was surely their first time on Friday, March 31 in Flagler County's "Jail and Bail" fundraiser. The event, held the day before the Relay for Life to raise money for the Daytona Beach division of the American Cancer Society, will contribute funds for the same cause.
Community members could nominate themselves or others to have a warrant issued for their arrest, and were freed only when their set bail was met. Arrestees were rounded up at their places of employment, handcuffed and transported in patrol cars by officers from the Flagler County Sheriff's Office to a mobile jail cell set up within the Flagler Chrysler Jeep Dodge dealership on Route 100. Some of the 15 participants, like Schools Superintendent Jacob Oliva, met their bail early and were issued a "Get out of jail free" card but still had report to "Judge" Bob Cuff, a local attorney, to respond to the "charges" against them.
The Relay for Life event takes place Saturday, April 1 from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Palm Coast Town Center.
