Mainland High School purchased two new trophy cases this year. Head coach Terry Anthony informed Assistant Principal Rod Smith that his boys and girls track and field teams had a couple nice additions to break in the cases.
Over the last two seasons, Mainland has won three boys district championships, two region championships, a girls district championship and a district runner-up trophy.
“I haven’t seen anything like him (D’marcus Adams). “He’s a tremendous athlete, and, if his work ethic catches up with his talent, he can be unstoppable.”
TERRY ANTHONY, Mainland track coach
Before these years of plenty, Mainland’s girls had never finished first or second in the district or beyond, and
the boys hadn’t won much in the last several decades.
When asked if he was doing anything different from past coaches, Anthony replied, “No.”
“The formula is still the same,” Anthony added. “I’m still using coach (Earl) Jackson’s workout routines. The biggest difference are the football players who have gotten involved. For whatever reason, a lot of them haven’t consistently come out in the past. And, having the weight program with Danny Stein, he’s gotten these guys in tip-top shape, and we’ve been able to dominate on the track.”
Mainland alum and current University of Central Florida football player Adrian Killins sparked the Bucs’ track program and now junior D'marcus Adams has grabbed the baton and is leading Mainland to more success.
Adams has won five individual region championships over the last two seasons, but he hopes this upcoming state meet will grant his first state championship.
“I haven’t seen anything like him,” Anthony said. “He’s a tremendous athlete, and, if his work ethic catches up with his talent, he can be unstoppable.”
The Bucs will look to improve from last season’s fifth-place state finish, when they compete at the FHSAA Track & Field State Championships Friday and Saturday, May 5-6, at IMG Academy.
