Halifax Rowing wins state championship
The Halifax Rowing Association men’s Junior 4+ crew won gold at the Florida Scholastic Rowing Association’s Sweeps Championships on Sunday, April 30, at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota.
Grant Wichlei, Bret Bay, Ben Steel, Ben Herstein and coxswain Vince Leffler earned the top prize and the Rothstein Cup by posting a 5:09:07 in the 1500-meter race, crossing the finish line ahead of 19 other teams from around Florida over the two-day event.
The girls junior 4+ team (Ashley Dodd, Julia Van Cleef, Elisa Maneke, Emma Dominguez and coxswain Ryan Welsh fourth out of a field of 14 boats.

Father Lopez track athletes advance to state meet
The Father Lopez Green Wave will be represented by nine student-athletes who placed in the Top 4 at the Region 3-1A Meet on Friday, April 28, at First Academy.
Gabby Watson, Zosia Yurkiewicz, Caroline Lydecker and Lexi Duckett won the 4x800 relay and placed second in the 4x400 relay. Yurkiewicz also took first in the 800-meter run.
Mack Harris placed second in the pole vault, and Jake Mayr Noah van der Burgt Julian Poviliatis and Noah Willis took fourth in the boys 4x800 relay. Duckett took second in the 400-meter dash and third in the 800-meter run. And Lydecker placed fourth in the triple jump.
The state meet will be held on Friday and Saturday, May 5-6, at IMG Academy.
Seabreeze softball to play region quarterfinal in Melbourne
After falling to Deltona 5-3 in the district championship game, the Lady Sandcrabs will play Melbourne at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, in Melbourne.
Sandcrabs baseball advance to district semis
The Seabreeze Sandcrabs advanced to the district semifinals after beating the Matanzas Pirates 14-2 on Monday, May 1, at Daytona State College. The Sandcrabs will play Edgewater at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday at DSC.
Mainland flag football prepares for district final
A few weeks ago, the Lady Bucs squeezed by the Matanzas Pirates 14-12 on April 12 to remain undefeated and hand the Pirates their first loss. Both teams expected to meet again, and the date is set.
After Matanzas beat Seabreeze 14-13 and Mainland beat New Smyrna Beach 7-6 on Tuesday, May 2, the two winners will meet again at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 4, at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
