Seabreeze softball advances to region final for the first time
The Lady Sandcrabs (18-8) shut out the Viera Hawks (22-7) 3-0 in the Region 2-7A semifinal Tuesday, May 9, at Daytona State College.
Seabreeze freshman Celeste Delorenzo accounted for all three runs, when her double emptied the loaded bases. Pitcher Danielle Spaulding pitched the shut out.
The Sandcrabs will play Lake Region in the program’s first ever region final Friday, May 12, at Lake Region.
Seabreeze Project unify track team finishes runner-up at state
The Seabreeze Project Unify girls 4x400 relay team won first place at the Florida High School Track & Field State Championships on Saturday, May 6, at IMG Academy.
Seabreeze girls placed second overall behind its relay teams, and the boys took fifth place. The girls 4x100 relay team took third, and the boys 4x100 placed fifth. The boys 4x400 also placed fifth.
Local student-athletes place in Top 10 at state track meet
Father Lopez girls placed seventh out of 51 teams and returned from the state track meet with the most medals (11) than any other school from the area.
Lexi Duckett won four medals, which was the most of any athlete from the area, and her teammates Zosia Yurkiewicz, Gabby Watson and Caroline Lydecker all won three medals.
Duckett took third in the 400-meter dash, and Yurkiewicz, Lydecker, Watson and Duckett placed second with a new school record in the 4x800 relay. The same girls also placed second in the 4x400 relay.
Noah Van der Burgt, Jake Mayr, Julian Polviatis and Noah placed 10th in the boys 4x800 relay.
Mainland’s D’marcus Adams competed despite having injured himself but still placed Top 10 in three events. He took seventh in the 400-meter dash, and, along with Steffan Mallory, Juwan Wright and Elijah White, they took sixth in the 4x400 relay. He also placed 10th in the long jump. His teammate C. J. Wilson placed seventh.
River Bend Golf Course crowns its club championship
River Bend Men's Golf Association recently held its club championship on Sunday, April 23, at the golf course. After two days of competition, a playoff was still needed to determine the champion.
Russ Depinto and Pete Scully were tied at 157 after 36 holes, but, on the first playoff hole, Russ DePinto birdied to defeat Pete Scully.
In Flight B competition, Shawn McMahon edged Mike Avallone and Robin Burr 138 to their 139 and 140, respectively. In Flight C, Don Crippen (142) beat out Rich Maselli and Jeff Ryan.
Brandon Campbell goes yard for the first time
Brandon Spikes — a member of the Ormond Spikes — hit his first ever home run on Saturday, April 29.
