Flagler Select baseball wins Mother’s Day championship
Flagler Select, a 13U travel baseball team, won the Mother’s Day Turbo Tournament Saturday, May 13, in Apopka.
The Select went 3-0 in all of its games, although Flagler only played with eight players. The team scored 18 runs while allowing one. Noah Cundiff hit a three-run home run. Noah Rineer threw 75 pitches in two games, consisting of 7 innings, and Drew Castanheira pitched 46 pitches in three innings, allowing no runs or hits. There were no errors made by the team. Every play recorded at least one hit for the weekend with a team batting average of .333. All games were played in less than an hour.
Players on the team include Caleb Jerman, Jaymes Pringle, Brock Roberts, Noah Rineer, Noah Cundiff, Bailey Russell, Lawson Cohens, Drew Castanheira and Reggie Allen.
Flagler County photographer Steven Libby is cancer free
A few weeks ago, an Observer column highlighted Flagler County photographer Steven Libby who was diagnosed with cancer, although he continued to work through his illness. Libby has now been pronounced cancer free, according to Bob Rollins, Libby’s caregiver and mentor.
Bulldogs’ Peppin and Green win FPC top athlete awards
Among the many awards given at Flagler Palm Coast’s Outstanding Athletes’ of the Year Banquet Thursday, May 11, at the Hilton Garden Inn, senior Michael Peppin and junior Skye Green were awarded the top male and female athletes of the year.
Green led the Lady Bulldogs’ basketball team back to the region playoffs, and she averaged 17 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks per game. Peppin won the discus state championship, along with the conference, district, region and region titles. He was also awarded the Marine Corp’s Distinguished Athlete Award. They also won their respective sport awards.
Matanzas alum gets selected to college lacrosse All-Conference team
Stephanie Stuart, a Matanzas lacrosse alum at Florida Institute of Technology, was recently selected to the All-Sunshine State Conference First Team for the second straight season.
Stuart helped lead FSC to a No. 6 ranking in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association coaches’ poll as the starting goalie. Last year they reached No.19.
The team also received a bid to the NCAA Division-II Lacrosse Tournament where they lost in the Elite Eight.
Palm Coast Yacht Club to host bowling tournament for Family Life
More than 18 bowling teams have formed to participate in Palm Coast Yacht Club’s bowling tournament fundraiser for the Family Life Center from 2-6 p.m. Saturday, May 21, at Palm Coast Lanes at 11 Old Kings North.
The Club is inviting members of service groups, businesses and other organizations in the Palm Coast area to participate in “Bowl Aweigh.”
Teams of five each will compete for prizes during the event, which will also feature raffles and door prizes. Cost for team members is $20.00 each, with sponsorships being offered for $25.00. Boosters are invited to cheer on their favorite teams for a fee of $10.00. All proceeds go to the Family Life Center of Flagler County.
