Leadership Flagler graduates 24th class — and seven other pretty cool things your neighbors have been doing

Leadership Flagler, as well as Youth Leadership Flagler, held their graduation events on May 10, at the Hilton Garden Inn. The programs give participants a chance to learn about many aspect of their community and work together to serve others.

Happy 100th birthday

On May 7, Trinity Presbyterian Church celebrated the 100th birthday of Alice (Ricketts) Powell, born May 7, 1917, in Jamaica. She has been a member of the church for over 30 years. Gov. Rick Scott sent a tribute.

Alice currently lives in an assisted living facility and enjoys relatively good health. She attributes her longevity to her genes. Powell’s sister died two years ago at age 106; another sister is 98. Thanks to Dr. Maureen F. Linton for providing this information.

  • Johnny Pingshaw and James Rainey
    Johnny Pingshaw and James Rainey
    Flagler County natives Johnny Pingshaw and James Rainey were commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army during a ceremony May 12, at Stetson University. Both young men also graduated from Stetson on May 13.
  • Palm Coast residents Margarita Orozco and Michelle Triantafyllidis recently graduated from Flagler College’s Public Administration.
  • Flagler County Local 4337 raised $2,200 in the 2017 Fill the Boot campaign, benefitting the Muscular Dystrophy Association and helped send more than 40 children to summer camp. The fundraising coordinator was Jasmyne Stanley.
  • The charter of the Old Kings Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution was presented to Sisco Dean of the Flagler County Historical Society by Brenda Crosby and will be displayed in the Archive Room of the Holden House, at 204 Moody Blvd., Bunnell.
  • On behalf of the Crafters of Christ Lutheran Church, James Myers and Judy Julch presented a check for $754 to Terri Belletto, of the Flagler Free Clinic, in Bunnell. The funds were enough to cover one day’s operating expenses at the clinic.
  • United Way’s Help Me Grow Florida program conducted 833 developmental screenings of local children, ages newborn to 8, in 2016, in Flagler and Volusia counties. Forty-four percent of those screenings had a monitoring or concern result, requiring care. For more, call 2-1-1 or visit www.helpmegrowvfc.org.
