Flagler County Sheriff's Office deputies will increase DUI enforcement his Memorial Day weekend from Friday, May 26 through Monday, May 29, according to a news release from the Flagler County Sheriff's Office.

In preparation for the weekend, Sheriff Rick Staly also unveiled a new "Taxi-Patrol car" — a patrol car-taxi hybrid — and deputies may park it around town to remind residents to find a safe ride home if they're partying with alcohol.

“Remember that a taxi or Uber ride will cost you much less than a ride by my deputies to the Green Roof Inn,” Sheriff Rick Staly said in the news release. “Have a safe Memorial Day weekend and choose your ride. Don’t endanger yourself or others by driving impaired.”

The Bunnell Police Department and the Flagler Beach Police Department are also taking part in increased DUI enforcement over the weekend, and marine units will be patrolling the water for boaters who are boating under the influence.

Sheriff's Office investigation shuts down marijuana grow house

Working off of an anonymous tip, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Unit investigated an outdoor marijuana grow operation at 83 Patric Drive in Palm Coast, according to a Sheriff's Office news release.

Deputies were able to get a clear view of the marijuana plants, and got a search warrant to search the home's backyard. They executed the warrant at 5:15 p.m. May 17, seizing a total of 50 marijuana plants.

The estimated value of the marijuana plants was $57,400, according to High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force.

"It’s time drug dealers get the message," Sheriff Rick Staly said in the news release. "Get your drugs out of Flagler County because we are coming after you. This was a great joint effort between the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement HIDTA Narcotics Task Force.”

Charges are pending for production of marijuana, according to the news release.

Deputies arrested two people after a 6 a.m. raid on a suspected drug house at 101 Wellwood Lane, Unit B, in Palm Coast May 17.

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Special Investigations Unit along with patrol deputies and members of the Sheriff's Office's Tactical Team executed the warrant, arresting Garry Gordon Kleingardener III, 33, and Ancil Adrean Oliver, 29, on multiple drug-related charges, according to a news release from the Flagler County Sheriff's Office.

During the search, investigators seized over 102 grams of marijuana, 42 grams of cocaine, two firearms, packaging supplies, two digital scales and $600 in cash.

Kleingardener is charged with trafficking in cocaine, possession of more than 20 grams of cannabis, three counts of possession of a controlled substance, tampering with evidence and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Deputies found a black safe that contained large amount of cocaine, marijuana, another .40 caliber handgun, empty baggies and two digital scales in Kleingardener’s bedroom.

Detectives also found the 18 baggies of cocaine from beneath the mattress of Kleingardener's 3-year-old child’s changing table. The child's room also contained $600 in cash and a loaded 40 caliber handgun. The 3-year-old was not in the house when deputies searched it.

Oliver is charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of cannabis with intent to distribute and possession of drug paraphernalia. Detectives found 15 baggies of cocaine in the defendant’s bedroom. They also found two baggies and a plastic jar of marijuana in the bedroom.

"This was a great team effort by patrol, our tactical unit, and our Special Investigations Unit," Sheriff Rick Staly said in the news release. "If you peddle poison in our community, are involved in gangs, or use guns in your crimes, we are coming after you. Get out of our county or go to jail."

Sheriff's Office reminds locals about bicycle safety rules

In recognition of May as Bicycle Safety Month, the Flagler County Sheriff's Office has issued tips designed to help local bicyclists stay safe. Bicycling is a great way to stay in shape, commute, and spend time outdoors, and Flagler County has a variety of biking trails, including Bulow Trails, Graham Swamp, Lehigh Trail, and Linear Park.

“We take bicycle safety seriously at the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office,” Sheriff Rick Staly said in a Sheriff's Office news release. “Not only do we want to keep our community safe while they are riding bikes, but we also have a Bike Patrol Unit at the Sheriff’s Office, and they follow these same safety rules.”

Those rules are:

  • Wear  a properly fitted helmet that meets safety standards.
  • Follow the rules of the road; cyclists must follow the same rules as motorists.
  • Ride single-file in the direction of traffic, and watch for opening car doors and other hazards.
  • Use hand signals when turning and use crosswalks at intersections.
  • Wear bright clothing and ride during the day. If riding at night, wear reflective clothing and
  • have lights in the front and back.
  • Make sure the bike is equipped with reflectors on the rear, front, pedals and spokes.
  • a properly fitted helmet that meets safety standards.
