Student-athletes and a coach rack up Spectrum Sports awards
Spectrum Sports (Formerly Brighthouse) awarded 29 medalists as athletes and coaches of the year in their respective sports at its annual Volusia and Flagler County Breakfast of Champions Awards Tuesday, May 16, at the Daytona Beach Resort and Conference Center.
Of those 29 categories, both Mainland and Seabreeze won three awards each. Franco Perez (boys soccer), Nathan Murphy (coach of the year) and James Vuille-Kowing (boys tennis) represented the Sandcrabs. Tahara Williams (flag football), Denzel Houston (football offense) and Claire Albrecht (girls golf) represented the Buccaneers.
Project Unify student-athletes win more state-level medals
Just two weeks after Seabreeze’s Project Unify athletes won several medals at the Unified FHSAA State Meets, they collected some more at the Special Olympics Summer State Games Saturday, May 20, at ESPN Wide World of Sports.
The 4x100 relay team (Tonette Jackson, Mandy Brock, Isabel McLin, Jasmine Taylor) won gold again, and
Matthew Mundy and Rachael PettyJohn also won gold medals in tennis.
Kamryn Williams and Jackie Myers took silver in bocce. Jackson added a silver medal for the 100-meter dash and a bronze medal for shot put, and Taylor added bronze Medal for the 100-meter and silver in the shot put.
Ormond Spikes13U travel teams win games in dramatic fashion
In 13U competition, John Crosson won the game for the Spikes over Julington Creek by recording an in-the-park grand slam for an 8-4 final on Saturday, May 20, at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex.
The Spikes would go on to lose in the semifinal round.
Mainland football dominates Spruce Creek in spring game
After weeks of back-and-forth trash talk, the Buccaneers won the battle on the field 41-7 Friday, May 19, at Spruce Creek.
Soon-to-be senior Jake Novello started for the Bucs —after three years of Denzel Houston — and picked up where the former Mainland star left off. He threw for over 225 yards and four touchdown passes in three quarters.
Novello’s TD passes went to D’Marcus Adams (70-yarder) two to Brian Jenkins and another to Shawn Daffin. Will Cowles scored the Bucs’ other varsity touchdown with a one-yard run. Running back D’Andre McMillian rushed for over 80 yards for the game high.
Ormond Lions Club donate scholarships to Lea Gray and Jaron Wilson
The Ormond Beach Lions Club Foundation awarded Seabreeze students Lea Gray and Jaron Wilson its $1,000 Andy Romano Memorial Scholarship at the school’s Annual Awards Ceremony.
Gray ranks second in this year’s graduating class with a 4.55 GPA. She is also a two-time Leo Club president and was recently named Florida Lions’ Leo of the Year. She’s planning to pursue a degree in Chemical Engineering.
Jaron Wilson accumulated a 4.45 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. Wilson was a member of the Marching and Symphonic Bands. Jaron accumulated over 600 hours of community service. Jaron will attend UCF and major in Computer Engineering.
