Student-athletes rack up Spectrum Sports awards
Spectrum Sports (Formerly Brighthouse) awarded 29 medalists as athletes and coaches of the year in their respective sports at its annual Volusia and Flagler County Breakfast of Champions Awards Tuesday, May 16, at the Daytona Beach Resort and Conference Center.
Both Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas won three awards each. Skye Green (girls basketball), Avery Holder (wrestling) and Courtney Gales (girls track) represented the Bulldogs, and Nick Kubiet (football defense), Miracle Porter (girls soccer) and Kylie Dahlberg (girls scholar athlete) represented Pirate Nation.
Local strong man breaks three world and one national weightlifting records
Shawn Roop, a retired Army Captain, broke three more national powerlifting records at the American Powerlifting Federation Raw Nationals on Saturday, May 7, at Lake Buena Vista.
Already an owner of three APF records, Roop squatted 502 pounds, bench pressed 402 pounds (APF record), dead lifted 668 pounds (APF and World Powerlifting Congress record) for a total of 1,572 pounds, which is also an APF record.
Roop looks to add to his seven records when he competes in the APF Raw Classic Nationals in Saturday, June 17, in Jacksonville.
St. Elizabeth Catholic School wins fourth straight title
St. Elizabeth Ann Seton’s girls track and field team recently won the Grade School Track and Field Championships, for the fourth straight year, at Bishop Snyder High School.
The girls edged Jacksonville’s St. Paul 156-148. The team also broke or set school records this season. Hope Donasco broke school records in the triple jump, 100-meter dash and hurdles races, and she ran on the 4x100 relay team (with Holly Darlington, Adesuwa Salami and Enrica Dinopol) that set a new school record. She also helped set the 4x400 relay school record.
Dinopol also set the school record in the 200-meter dash. Ayanna Fulton set new marks in the 1500-meter run, 3000-meter run and the 4 x 800 relay.
Fifth grader Megan Snyder broke the 1600-meter run record, tied the 800-meter record and ran on the 4x800 relay team. Natalie Minor broke school records in the high jump and long jump, while Salami also broke the shot put record.
For the boy’s team, Cayden Allen set school records in the 100-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash. Christian Baeza set new standards in the 1500- and 3000-meter runs.
Flagler Sportfishing Club holds annual fishing competition to support Family Life Center
The club hosted its 21st-annual Spring Classic Tournament on Saturday, April 22, in Flagler Beach.
Over 100 fisherman competed for upwards of $8,000 in cash prizes and merchandise, and part of the proceeds went to assist the Family Life Center, which provides no-cost services to families experiencing domestic violence.
First-place finishers included Scott Knudson, who caught a 1.55-pound flounder, Nolan Cauley and his 6.50-pound red fish and Dallas Moore and 2.70-pound trout. Nicholas Pandich won the junior division with a 3.85-pound red fish.
