Having been inspired by her father Tony's service in the U.S. Army 82nd Airborne, Hailey, a 10-year-old student at Imagine School at Town Center, wrote a speech about joining the Army and received a certificate of appreciation, a commander’s coin and a hand-written note from the commander of the Jacksonville Army Recruiting Battalion, Lt. Col. Kevin P. Buettner. Hailey wrote the speech as a submission for the 4-H Tropicana Speech Contest, and it earned second place in its category at the school.
Old Kings Elementary School held field days the week of May 15 for students to get active and have fun. This year’s theme was “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, and Something Blue” in honor of the six teachers who got married this past school year.
United Way’s Help Me Grow Florida program reported that it conducted 833 developmental screenings of local children, ages newborn to 8, in Flagler and Volusia counties in 2016. The Flagler/Palm Coast Kiwanis Club hosted its 14th-annual Education Recognition Luncheon on May 18. Scholarships winners from local high schools were Elizabeth Kirkconnell, Daniel Thomas, Lana Schultz, Nick Jones, Anna Buss, Micah Zahn, Anna Walls, Guillermo Soto, Judy Colindres and Kobi Kane.
Nick Snedeker, an eighth-grader at First Baptist Christian Academy in Bunnell, was awarded the Bronze Good Citizenship Medal from The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution.
The Palm Beach Yacht Club hosted “Bowl Aweigh” to benefit the Family Life Center of Flagler County on May 21. Eighteen teams of five competed for prizes at Palm Coast Lanes and raised $2,200 for the Family Life Center. “There was so much energy in the room, we thought the roof was going to explode,” Event Chairwoman Sarah Ulis said in a press release.
