A Daytona Beach man was shot and killed after he fired multiple round from a handgun at Port Orange Police Officers.
The suspect, Robert A. Powell, 53, had been shot and killed after officers returned fire, according to authorities. At approximately 9 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3, Port Orange officers were approached by a white male driving a vehicle in the City Center area, according to a press release.
Authorities stated that the officers started speaking with the individual but "he abruptly left the scene" striking Officer Wayne Jean with the side of his vehicle.
According to police, the officers pursued the suspect for a short period of time until he led them to a rear parking lot at the area of 4801 Clyde Morris Blvd., Coral Bay Villas.
The suspect exited the car, firing multiple rounds at the officers from a handgun, according to authorities. The suspect was killed after officers began firing back, according to the police department.
Jean was treated and released from the hospital with minor injuries, according to authorities. The Port Orange Police Department stated that in addition to Jean, two other officers were involved in the shooting— Sergeant Warren Carmen and Officer Jacob Bissonnette.
The Department of Law Enforcement is now investigating the shooting, which is standard operating procedure for any officer involved shooting, according to the police department. According to authorities, "in accordance with policy and procedure following an officer involved shooting," all three officers have been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation of the incident by the FDLE and a review by the State’s Attorney’s Office.
