Hosted by MPower Fitness and Crazy Sock Divas, the Party in Pink Zumbathon charity event was held on Sunday, Oct. 29, at Flagler Palm Coast High School.
The event raised $1,125 to benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation for breast cancer research and prevention. Eight Zumba instructors led two hours of dancing with over 75 people.
“We plan to host this event each and every year until a cure is discovered,” said Melissa Mondello, co-owner and fitness manager for MPower Fitness, in an email. “Most participants have known or loved someone affected by the disease.”
While her family was getting gas to prepare for Hurricane Irma, Palm Coast resident Frances Bauman fell in the bathroom. Breelyn Gonzales, her 9-year-old great niece, discovered her in a pool of blood and acted fast. Gonzales went to their neighbor’s house, and 911 was called.
The ambulance took Bauman to Halifax Hospital where she got 31 staples in her head.
“I call her my hero,” Bauman said about her great nice. “She saved my life. If it wasn’t for her, I don’t think I would be here today.”
Bauman is recovering “slowly but surely.” She said she was very lucky Gonzales was there to help.
The Inaugural Margarita Ball of Flagler County was held Friday, Nov. 3, at Channel Side, located a 1 Yacht Club Drive. About 180 guest brought toys and bicycles for Flagler Children in need for this holiday season.
The ball was the brainchild of Cindy Kiel Evans of Jeff Evans State Farm. Her husband, Jeff Evans, was the founding director 31 years ago for the Volusia Margarita Ball. At the request of Flagler friends to bring the ball to the area, Cindy Evans reached out to other community business leaders to join her in her mission to start the Margarita Society of Flagler County with eight total couples. The directors were Cindy Evans, Annette Gardinal and Rebecca Delorenzo.
The Fantasy Lights event at Palm Coast’s Central Park, put on by the Rotary Club of Flagler County, is looking for bands to entertain each evening in December.
Church bands and choirs, school groups and individuals and others are invited to sign up and sing seasonal music for the holidays.

Community Cats of Palm Coast volunteers John and Judy McGovern have hosted several large yard sale fundraisers for the organization at their home in the F section, their most recent sales taking place Nov. 4 and 5. The weekend's event earned more than $3,000 for Community Cats of Palm Coast, which will help aid the homeless cats of Flagler County.
A group of individuals representing several organizations have come together under the leadership and vision of Sandra Shank of Abundant Life Ministries to provide “A Christmas to Remember” for children who may be under supervision of Department of Children and Families, foster care or group homes for the holidays.
The event is planned for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 16, at the Flagler County Fairgrounds. It will offer a variety of family fun activities, music, food and gifts.
The organizations serving as the steering committee include: Abundant Life Ministries-Hope House, Inc., Community Partner for Children, Inc., Guardian Ad Litem Program, Inspiration of Hope Community Resources, Inc. and Inspiring Our Youth Social Action Movement.
Volunteers are needed to help sort and wrap gifts on Dec. 11, decorate Cattleman’s Hall on Dec. 15 and set up on the day of the event at 8 a.m. The committee is soliciting unwrapped toys, gift cards and new clothing through Dec. 8. This award will recognize a local individual who has distinguished themselves through many hours of community service without expectation of compensation. The nominee must embrace integrity, justice, honesty, responsibility, compassion and dedication and devote their services to improve the lives of those in need. The Imagine School at Town Center middle school STEAM lab with Ms. Cook got a visit from Qubits Toy inventors, Mark and Lisa Burginger. They walked the students through the history of construction toys from basic wooden blocks and Lincoln Logs to Legos and Qubits.
Each student got to take part in a group build to create a tower made from Qubits. The Burgingers donated a full 84-piece set to the ITSC STEAM program.
The first EdCamp Flagler took place on Saturday, Nov. 4, at Buddy Taylor Middle School. The participant-driven conference, which is sponsored by both local and educational businesses, is a free day of learning experiences for educators.
The St. Augustine pirates, known as Krewe of the 13, Inc., presented a $2,500 check to St. Francis House at the organization’s Halloween dinner party, hosted by Kap'n Good' Karl Kennell and Ye BOGO Buccaneers.
