Donations are being collected in Port Orange for survivors of domestic violence as part of the Allstate Foundation's Purple Purse Holiday Drive.
The national campaign works to help women in domestic violence situations and give them the resources once they are out of their abusive relationship. This campaign comes on the heels of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, which was in October.
In Port Orange, Allstate Agency Principal Kerry Ravi and her team have already been collecting and getting in donations. Several boxes and plastic bins now sit in their office hallway ready to be distributed in Volusia County. Ravi said that when she decided to participate she wanted to donate within the area, specifically the Domestic Abuse Council.
"It's a way to help people in the community and give back," Ravi said. "One in four women in America experiences domestic violence in their lifetime, and a lot of times you don't even know."
Ravi said the drive had initially been set to end on Nov. 20, but it was decided to try to collect more items and extended the deadline until the end of the month. The overall goal of the campaign is to reach a total of 40 agents participating in order to raise $40,000 of Helping Hands in the Community grants donated to the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence.
"It's hard for women to break away from domestic violence situations because they don't have the finances," Ravi said. "So we're just trying to help do what we can as a part of the community."
Donations can be dropped off at 5889 S. Williamson Blvd.
