With a new lounge area and an open atrium space, “phase two” of Flagler Playhouse’s expansion was revealed to the public on Wednesday, Nov. 29.
Flagler Playhouse President Monica Clark said she’s thrilled with the new additions, as the spaces will give guests comfortable areas to wait in before shows.
“In the old space, we only had a very small area for people to sit and wait until the house opens so people could go in,” Clark said. “Now, they can come in, get a glass of wine, grab something to eat, sit (and) relax until the actual house opens for them.”
She said she’s hoping the new space will encourage guests to come early before shows, instead of just trickling in at showtime.
Construction on “phase two” started in January and was completed by the end of August, just in time for the fall theater season. However, Hurricane Irma put a stop to Flagler Playhouse’s original ribbon-cutting ceremony planned for early September.
The new atrium space serves as a center courtyard between the actual theater and the new lounge. Personalized bricks are available for purchase to be placed in the atrium ground.
Clark said the lounge was built as a multi-purpose room, with carpet covering most of it and wood flooring on one side, allowing it to hopefully be a space for other entertainment events like open mic nights, murder mystery theater, dinner theater and more.
“We wanted to plan ahead so that if we decided to something, we would have the facility ready to do it,” she said.
“Phase one,” which was completed about three years ago, included new bathrooms, a work room for prop construction, a storage room and wings leading to the stage so objects could be easily added between scenes.
