On the night of Friday, Oct. 6, at Spruce Creek High School, the Atlantic football team had a chance to win its first football game of the season when it took the field against a Seabreeze team that had won just two games and was coming off of a 36-0 loss to Flagler Palm Coast the week prior.
Regardless, the Sharks dropped their sixth game of the season after giving up 41 points to a Sandcrabs team that has only scored 31 points all season. The Sharks mustered up just 12 points with its last score coming late in the fourth quarter.
Atlantic kept the game close early but gave up 27 points in the second half.
Following a fumble recovery in the third quarter, Sandcrabs running back De'Shaun Hugee threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Devonta Phillips to give the Sandcrabs a 33-6 lead in the fourth quarter.
Up next, the Sharks will try to capture their first win of the season against Satellite on Friday, Oct. 13, at 7 p.m. at Spruce Creek High School.
Spruce Creek has hardly been challenged so far this football season.
The Hawks didn't have a game on Friday, Oct. 6, due to a bye week, and they used the extra time off to rest, recover from injury and prepare for their homecoming showdown with Flagler Palm Coast on Friday, Oct. 13, at Spruce Creek High School at 7 p.m.
Two Hawks players who had been dealing with injuries, two-way player Maximus Campbell (concussion) and David Adams (shoulder) , should return to the field against the Bulldogs.
"We pulled back on a lot of the hitting in practice and just kind of worked on fundamentals," Spruce Creek coach Andy Price said. "I think we're as healthy as we're going to be all year."
The Hawks' high-powerd offense, which features dynamic senior signal caller Kyle Minckler and running back Jacquez Lord, will have to figure out a way to get through FPC's vaunted defense. Spruce Creek has averaged 46.2 points per game, while the Bulldogs have surrendered just 12.8 points per game.
Price said his team isn't going to treat this game a differently than any other game.
"We are preparing for this game like we would any other week," he said. "The kids understand what's going on."
Spruce Creek's varsity and junior varsity squads rolled in their wins over Lake Mary.
The varsity Hawks swept Lake Mary in straight sets, winning 25-16, 25-12 and 25-17. The JV team won in three sets with scores of 25-22, 25-22 and 15-12.
Spruce Creek's Anna Giannini recorded five kills and five blocks, and Mary Roth totaled eight digs and 14 assists to help the Hawks improve to a 12-5 record.
