When Port Orange resident Jane Sciortino was out walking her dogs and found a plastic bag filled with paper and a piece of candy near the end of her driveway she thought it was only litter.
However, on closer inspection, she realized the papers were actually KKK flyers.
"Support the white revolution," and the "Loyal White Knights of the KKK," are among the statements typed onto the flyer, along with a "Klan hotline."
Sciortino, who lives east of Nova Road and off of Madeline Avenue, found the papers on Sunday, Oct. 8. She later wrote in a Facebook post that the papers had been "strewn across" her neighborhood. She noted that other people had reported finding similar flyers beachside.
Describing what she found, Sciortino said that it was "sick and it doesn't need to be put up with."
In a press release the Port Orange Police Department wrote that the "City of Port Orange and the Port Orange Police Department denounce hate groups, hate crimes, and any activity that advances their rhetoric."
The department is also urging citizens to report incidents of hate crime and hate messaging.
