A new flight school will open up at the Flagler County Executive Airport.

“We’re excited about the economic development prospects for it,” County Commissioner Donald O’Brien said during a commission meeting Oct. 16. “It helps the growth of our airport, and I think this is a good opportunity for us, and a good deal.”

Academy of Aviation, which currently has two locations in New York, will be leasing office and hangar space at the airport for a combined $3,175 per month, including maintenance fees.

“(Academy of Aviation) will be having an academy here at our airport, and buying fuel from our airport, and leasing a building from the airport and hangars, which is all revenue,” airport director Roy Seiger said. “And on top off that, they’re going to have people that are going to work there — flight instructors, people who are going to be giving to our community as far as economic development.”

The airport’s new runway will also soon be completed: Its first corporate jet takeoff on the new runway is scheduled for Oct. 23.
