Elected officials and business leaders welcomed Launch Federal Credit Union at a groundbreaking ceremony Oct. 18. Construction will start immediately at the site, 240 Williamson Boulevard, in the now empty lot between Tire Kingdom and Takeya Japanese Steak House.
The full-service credit union is expected to open in May. All those who live, work, worship or attend school in Volusia and Brevard counties can join the credit union, said spokeswoman Kelly Haskins.
It will be the 13th branch in Volusia and Brevard counties. There are already many members in Ormond Beach, according to Joe Mirachi, CEO.
The company has hired Rhodes Building Company, which expects 287 jobs to be created during construction. After opening, there will be eight full-time employees.
Launch Federal Credit Union started in 1963 as Merritt Island Launch Area Federal Credit Union, and in the early 1970s merged with Halifax Teachers Federal Credit Union. At that time, the company decided to “rebrand” and named itself Launch to reflect both groups.
“Teachers help launch students in life,” Mirachi said.
The credit union received a charter to serve all of Volusia and Brevard counties in 1997.
Andrew Spar, president of the Volusia Teachers Organization, attended the ribbon cutting and said there is still a close relationship. The credit union offers interest-free loans to teachers at the beginning of the school year, he said.
Mayor Bill Partington pointed out benefits of the location, being close to Granada Boulevard, Interstate 95, and the expected growth to the south in the LPGA Boulevard area.
“We’re excited you are coming to Ormond Beach,” he said.
