There was cake, but it wasn't for anyone's birthday. It was to celebrate Florida City Government Week, which was created to raise awareness about the functions and services of city government throughout the state.

The effort is sponsored by the Florida League of Cities.

The theme of this year’s Florida City Government Week is “My City I’m Part of it, I’m Proud of it.”

On Monday, Oct. 23, a group Port Orange residents sliced into the dessert before participating in session six of the Port Orange University. The 'citizens academy' was put on in order to help residents have a better understanding of their city and the services carried out in each department.

During the Monday session, held at the city's water treatment plant, the 29 residents took a tour of the facility and were educated on the city's field and lab operations.

Residents participating in session six also learned about water supply, purification and distribution.
