Hanging on to an eight-point lead in the fourth quarter, Spruce Creek running back Jacquez Lord had the ball in his hands. With four minutes left in the game, the 5-foot-7, 145-pound speedster took a hand off 47 yards into the end zone to give the Hawks a two-score lead.
But despite Lord's late-game heroics, Hawks quarterback Kyle Minckler was the star of the night. With a shot at the postseason on the line, Spruce Creek (7-1, 3-1) edged out University 49-34 on the night of Friday, Oct. 27, at Spruce Creek High School. Minckler rushed for four scores on the ground in addition to a lone touchdown pass.
After falling behind 28-14 early in the third quarter, University cut into the Hawks' lead with a 51-yard run by running back Lorenzo Lingard at the 6:58 mark in the third frame. Lingard was part of an offense that gashed the Hawks for 516 yards of total offense.
With University marching for a score in the dwindling minutes of the fourth quarter, Spruce Creek defensive end Tyler Berrong intercepted a tipped pass to ensure the Hawks' victory.
Spruce Creek's regular season will conclude when it faces New Smyrna Beach at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, at the New Smyrna Beach Sports Complex.
