The Ormond Beach Lions Club named Harlyn Kaler as its student of the month for October at the club's meeting on Oct. 25.
Kaler has been part of the Seabreeze High School's volleyball team for three years and she currently serves as team captain. She's also a black belt in taekwondo. For the past four years, Kaler has volunteered and served as manager of the school's boys wrestling team.
Aside from sports, Kaler is in the top 10 percent of her class with a 4.1 GPA and has made honor roll all four years of higschool. In addition, she's a member of the National Honor Society. Outside of school, she is also a volunteer for Realtors Sold for the Cause and the Ormond Chamber of Commerce.
Once she graduates, Kaler plans to become a gator at the University of Florida, where she will major in psychology and criminal justice.
A Maryland museum director turned painter is coming to Ormond Beach to show his ocean-inspired creations, which he often thinks up while on his surfboard.
Stephen Estrada's "Journey to the Sea" collection will debut at the Ormond Memorial Art Museum on Nov. 17 and will run until Jan. 14. The museum will host an opening reception on 6-8 p.m., Nov. 17 and Estrada will be in attendance to answer any questions about his oil paintings.
Having lived in California for a large part of his life, Estrada loved to hike and surf. He began to paint because of his mother, who was also and artists and encouraged him to find beauty in the outdoors.
OMAM is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and 12-4 p.m. on the weekends. A $2 donation is requested.
