Florida Hospital Oceanside will be closed for the next 18 months at minimum due to damages sustained during Hurricane Irma, meaning in case of a medical emergency, beachside residents in Ormond Beach will have a longer commute to a hospital until at least spring of 2019.
According to a statement by Lindsay Cashio, assistant director of communications for the hospital's east Florida region, 18 months is the soonest the hospital could open. She wrote the facility's interior and exterior were damaged during the storm. The hospital has also closed its transitional care unit, a skilled nursing facility helping patients who need more care before being sent home, "because there is no short-term fix for the building," wrote Cashio.
The current TCU patients will continue to be cared for until they are ready for discharge at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center, but no new patients will be admitted into the program. However, the hospital has not closed its rehab services. The Florida Hospital Peninsula Rehabilitation program was transitioned to the Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center.
Beachside residents seeking care at Florida Hospital will have to travel to Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in Daytona Beach, which could prove to be a 20-minute trip at minimum. Florida Hospital Oceanside is the only hospital located on the beachside in the local area.
