Votran has announced the company will help in the evacuation and recovery efforts of Hurricane Irma throughout Volusia County.

An update from Friday, Sept. 8 indicated that if an evacuation is issued, Votran will be under Volusia County Emergency Management and will follow directions through the Emergency Management Plan. Additionally, Votran announced it will provide free transportation to public shelters when they open.

According to the Volusia County website, "Votran will continue to operate regular bus routes as long as storm conditions allow," while the vehicles will be removed from roadways if winds are sustained at 35 miles per hour.

Votran services are expected to resume as soon as possible once the hurricane has passed, while beachside service will resume once bridges are reopened.

Votran officials are asking evacuees to take only essential items, with carry-on items being limited to a pillow, blanket and one carry-one bag not large than 22 feet by 16 feet by 8 feet. Residents can also bring a folding chair to sit or sleep on.
